It turns out that in spite of the listed week’s delay, there was an episode of Long Riders aired this week in Japan, but it was just a recap episode, covering the previous events in the series with some new narration. This is not being simulcast by Daisuki because there’s not anything really new, but there is a little information regarding the episode on the Long Riders website. You can also see plot summaries (in Japanese) accompanied by some images for the other episodes.
Recap episodes, or even extensive recaps within an episode, unless a series has a long break are really not especially enjoyable. Actas seems to be struggling with getting Long Riders out in a timely fashion, so I guess they figured that having some content to air for their television timeslot was better than none.
Here’s a rough translation of the synopsis for episode 4.5. Please bear in mind I am by no means an expert, but this is a chance for me to try and use some of my Japanese skills.
There’s cycling with her childhood friend Aoi, riding by the sea with Hinako and Yayoi, and attempting to climb the mountain pass where she experienced some setbacks. After Ami meets Saki, she discovers the charm of a road bike and believes a new world can open up to her… In this special edition we watch Ami start and mature in her cycling journey together with her friends. With cycling commentary from the heroines, we can clearly see Ami’s path towards her road bike.
It turns out that a Ami’s folding bike is referred to as a Minivelo. What a quaint name! I wasn’t sure if this was just a Japanese word for a folding bike, but research seems to indicate that the name is used for bikes with small wheel circumferences, they don’t necessarily have to fold. With the small wheel circumference and light frame, even without the folding feature I’d imagine that this sort of bike is best for short commutes.
It doesn’t seem like there was any unique content added to this recap episode, so there’s not a lot to talk about (other than how cute the name minivelo is). Hopefully next week I’ll have some more Long Riders to share with you all!
